Grau&’s remix is an expressionistic intuitive reinterpretation building on selected Alkisah vocal tracks and the recording of a Berlin subway ride. Our process started by listening and reflecting on the samples from Senyawa’s work as well as a recording of the U2 subway which connects East and West Berlin. With those impressions in our ears we started individual recording sessions on synths, drums, and drum machines capturing whatever the impressions had sparked in our minds. Together with selected Alkisah samples the resulting recordings were then arranged on top of the subway ride recording in a film scoring-like manner and processed with effects. It was also in this production stage that we decided the resulting sonic journey should channel into the 19th century German lullaby ‘Der Mond ist aufgengen’ (The moon has risen) as we felt this would give the unruly piece a somewhat calming yet uncanny grounding at the end. The most fitting verses of the lullaby were thus selected, recorded in duette, and woven into the arrangement.

English translation of the lullaby:
Do you see the moon standing there?
It is only half visible
And yet round and beautiful
Some things are like that
That we laugh at
Because our eyes do not see them

The moon has risen
The golden stars are shining
In the sky bright and clear
The forest is black and silent
And from the meadows rises
The white mist wonderfully

German original:
Seht ihr den Mond dort stehen?
Er ist nur halb zu sehen
Und ist doch rund und schön
So sind wohl manche Sachen
Die wir getrost verlachen
Weil unsre Augen sie nicht sehen

Der Mond ist aufgegangen
Die goldnen Sternlein prangen
Am Himmel hell und klar
Der Wald steht schwarz und schweiget
Und aus den Wiesen steiget
Der weiße Nebel wunderbar
