Continuous Quality Improvement

about

Part of my listening and response to ‘the continuous now’ is a response to the constant din of ‘progress’. Noise in my head, noises in the city.

My studio overlooks a half-kilometer-in-diameter train track and every day, I hear megaton inter-regional trains as well as S-bahn wheels grate into this track as they traverse the arc to their next destination. These trains are tuned to city-wide schedules and this ‘pulse’ of the city is a sonic - if human-made - ‘now’ of where I live.

The name “Continuous Quality Improvement” comes from an article I read about Japanese train stations that are in/famously never late and the central control station workers who manage the network in Tokyo refer to the practice of ‘continuous quality improvement’ as their management principle to keep things running.
